Health Insurance Enrollment Season Explained

Oct 28, 2022Press Release

Most Americans are getting used to the new annual fall ritual of evaluating their next year’s health insurance coverage. Yet, many are still confused about who can do what and when. Here is a quick primer.

There are two over-lapping open enrollment periods depending on your age and situation:

Types of Plan Age For Most People For Coverage that Begins
Medicare Advantage Plans  65+ Oct 15 to Dec 7 Jan 1, 2023
Individual & Family / Covered California 0-64 Nov 1 to Dec 31 Jan 1, 2o23
Individual & Family / Covered California 0-64 Jan 1 to Jan 31 Feb 1, 2023

If you are 65 years or older and have Medicare, your Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) already started – October 15th and ends December 7th. This is when older adults can join or switch their Medicare coverage.

If you are younger than 65 years old and do not receive coverage from your employer, your Open Enrollment Period (OEP) will start next week – November 1st and ends on December 31st. This will ensure that your coverage continues uninterrupted (or starts) on January 1st, 2023. There is a second deadline that ends on January 31, 2023 but this will delay your coverage into February 1st.

This is the time to think about your healthcare needs for next year. Do you plan to get medical care more or less often than this year? Were you recently diagnosed with a health condition? Each plan is different or your current one may be changing. Even if nothing has changed, maybe you just want a plan that suits you better – You have choices.

Think about CCHP Medicare and Balance by CCHP in Covered California. CCHP is for people who live in San Francisco or San Mateo County. It’s a SF based health plan that caters specifically to Bay Area Chinese and Asians. This means there are independent neighborhood doctors and nurses who will care for you and more of your healthcare dollars stay in the community. You might ask why some people go with a large out-of-the-area corporation – healthcare is definitely local.

CCHP and Balance offers many options at various price points to suit you and your family’s unique need. You can get plans for little as $0 or $1 a month, depending on your income. CCHP has friendly experts who will help you pick the best plan for you.

So, don’t miss this once-a-year time to make sure you have the right health insurance coverage. Go into the holidays with the peace-of-mind knowing you got yourself and your family covered.
