Barriers to Care in San Francisco
Although San Francisco has been a worldwide leader in HIV/AIDS care since 1986, people at risk still face barriers that can delay testing and treatment. These barriers may include:
• Distrust of the health care system because of past discrimination
• Language barriers
• Immigration status concerns
• Privacy concerns
• Social differences affecting Latinx and Black/African American communities
• Not knowing that you may be at risk
Why Early Testing Is Important
If you do not get tested, you may unknowingly pass HIV to partners, and your immune system can become weaker over time. Waiting until symptoms appear may be too late. The more advanced the illness is when care begins, the harder it can be to recover and stay well.
