Our Mission

At CCHP, our mission is to improve the health of our community by delivering high-quality, affordable healthcare through culturally competent and linguistically appropriate services. We welcome all cultures and in any language.

Our Story

Origins

Our roots date back to late 1800s when Chinese residents in San Francisco did not have access to many vital services. Like many hard-working immigrants before them, the community founded the Tung Wah Dispensary in 1899 on what is now Sacramento Street. Staffed by Christian missionaries and herbalists, the dispensary offered both Western and Eastern medicines that were familiar to the community.

In 1925, the first and only Chinese hospital in America opened after the 1906 earthquake destroyed the dispensary. After expanding and serving the community for almost 100 years, Chinese Hospital was completely rebuilt in 2016. Chinese Hospital and its network of clinics now welcome anyone who needs quality medical care in San Francisco and San Mateo counties. The not-for-profit Chinese Hospital remains the only independent hospital in San Francisco under the guidance of the original 15 founding service organizations.

CCHP is Established

In 1986, a group of community physicians helped establish CCHP to fill a need among small family-owned businesses. At the time, traditional insurance companies did not find small businesses profitable to insure. Soon after, CCHP added Medicare Advantage plans and coverage for individuals and families.

Today

CCHP is licensed with the California Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) to offer commercial health plans and maintain a contract with Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) to offer Medicare Advantage plans. Today, CCHP competes directly with major health insurance companies by offering a high-quality, right-sized alternative for health care coverage. CCHP has grown to over 20,000 members (Membership data as of 2022).

Products

At CCHP, under the Balance by CCHP brand name, we offer plans focused on health, wellness and preventive services, integrating Western and Eastern remedies to individuals, families, employers of all sizes, and participate in Covered California marketplace. We continue to offer our CCHP branded Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plans in San Francisco and San Mateo counties.

Our Medicare Advantage plans are 4 Stars out of 5 Rated by CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) in 2021 and our marketplace plans are URAC accredited.
