As we move further into the year, it is crucial to remind yourself the importance of getting your flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines if recommended by your provider. As a valued health plan member, your well-being is our priority. These viruses have the potential to be severe, especially when they coexist. That’s why taking preventive measures is more essential than ever.

COVID-19 Vaccine Recommendation

As of October 6, 2023, the CDC recommends the updated 2023-2024 Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine for individuals 12 years and older. If you’re getting vaccinated for the first time, two doses are required. Those previously vaccinated with any original COVID-19 vaccine (including Moderna, Novavax, Pfizer-BioNTech, or Janssen) should receive one booster dose of the updated Novavax formula. Immuno-compromised individuals might need one or more additional doses for adequate protection. Additionally, individuals 12 years and up can opt for either the updated mRNA vaccines (Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech) or the Novavax vaccine.

Flu Vaccination

The flu vaccine has proven through time as a reliable protection against influenza. For most individuals, the ideal months for flu vaccination are September and October. The CDC advises annual flu vaccination for everyone over 6 months of age and emphasizes the importance of vaccination as long as flu viruses are active. If you’re 65 or older, you should get the high-dose version for stronger protection.

RSV Vaccination

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a prevalent respiratory disease, often showing as cold-like symptoms. RSV can be especially severe in infants and older adults. The CDC recommends that adults 60 and over consider receiving a single dose of the RSV vaccine. For infants under 8 months entering their first RSV season, a dose of nirsevimab is advised. Additionally, children between 8-19 months at heightened risk for severe RSV during their second RSV season should also receive a dose of nirsevimab. Pregnant individuals are recommended to receive one dose of RSV vaccine between weeks 32 and 36 of their pregnancy. Consult with your healthcare provider for more detailed information on RSV and related treatments.
